Should An Acai Berry Supplement Be In Your Diet In 2010?

There has been much fan fare about Acai Berry Supplements over the last few years. While most of the attention is focused on a few marketers and their wild claims about what the supplements will do, little attention has been shed on the real world benefits of the berry itself and high quality supplements derived from it.

Acai berry supplements will do many things. Probably more than we already know. The problem lies in that the market is flooded with so many low quality supplements that contain very little extracts from this South American berry. At the very least, we know that we can get beneficial nutrients from the acai berry.

Two substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids are found in the acai berry. In a WebMD article I read recently, they stated that these two substances are powerful anti-oxidants. If you’ve been hanging out in health and fitness forums very long at all, then you know what anti-oxidants are and why you want them in your diet.

One of the problems associated with the acai berry is that studies have just began to be done to determine just how beneficial this berry may or may not be. Preliminary studies suggest that this berry may have more anti-oxidants than strawberries, blueberries and cranberries. But these studies are still young and more intense studies need to be done before a final decision can be made.

Another area that is in question for acai berry supplements is in the weight loss industry. There have been many outlandish claims as to the weight loss benefits of taking acai berries. In all honesty though, there have been very few legititimate studies done to determine if the acai berry can boost the bodies ability to shed those excess pounds.

One thing we do know though, eating a diet high in powerful anti-oxidants is highly recommended by the health community. This diet should include all types of fruits and vegetables.
