The recumbent exercise bike has grown in popularity do to the many benefits that it has to offer. At first glance, the most obvious attractor is the bucket seat, which is much more comfortable than the smaller traditional seats found on spinning bikes and upright style exercise bikes. Another important feature that has attracted so many to these machines is that they have a low impact on your joints, as compared to a treadmill.

Studies have shown that the impact on your joints is even lower than using a stationary bike. On traditional exercise bikes, your legs are below the body thus adding some stress. When using a recumbent exercise bike, your legs are more perpendicular to your body, which means you are putting less stress on your knee and ankle joints.

Many individuals striving for that beach body prefer the recumbent bike because you can get a great cardio workout using it. You can also strengthen your lower body, and tighten such muscles as your inner thighs, buttocks and calves. There are benefits that the recumbent exercise bike offers that you cannot get using the traditional exercise bikes. If you move the seat closer towards the peddles, you can work your lower abs.

With all of the advancements in technology and reduction in costs, the recumbent exercise bike is becoming a more popular home fitness equipment choice. If you are considering buying one for your home here are a few things that you may want to consider. Since the key to getting a good workout on an exercise bike is the resistance, it is important that you know how the various bikes provide it.

Recumbent bikes have three different methods for providing tension. They are as follows; tension belt, air resistance, and magnetic resistance. The tension belt style bikes are popular because of the inexpensive pricing. The downside is most have very little to no extra features such as heart rate etc… The air style resistance bike carries a higher price tag and offers a few different tension levels. The magnetic style bike is by far the best one due to the variety of features that comes standard.

You will want to buy a bike that suits your needs. If you are already somewhat athletic, it is recommended that you choose the equipment with the magnetic resistance. If you have very little experience in the fitness arena, it is perfectly fine if you choose one of the lower end models.

One feature that is a must, no matter which model you choose, is the heart rate monitor. Although some of the bikes are sold without this feature it is highly recommended that you do obtain one with this feature. After all the whole purpose for riding the bike is to raise your heart level and to burn calories.

The body is designed as an all-terrain vehicle. In the case of running, most of us do the same thing to our bodies day after day, and expect to somehow get away with it! According to Andre Kaokane at Cross Country Running Shoes 101, we cannot run on asphalt for long without consequences. Most runners believe that the rigidity of asphalt is the biggest problem, but it may be that the lack of surface variety is equally bad or worse.

Same Old Running Surface

It’s a fact that most recreational runners do their running on roads and sidewalks. You can see them any morning on your way to work, running and jogging along the sidewalks in their quest for fitness. They hardly touch the dirt or the grass. Perhaps it’s just the easiest route, or an illusion of taking the path of least resistance.

But when your feet encounter exactly the same surface with each and every step, the body is subjected to the exact same forces with every footstrike. Not only does the hard surface aggravate the stress of impact, but it is repeated over and over in exactly the same way.

In addition, there is no chance for the body to encounter and adapt to a healthy variety of other kinds of stresses. So running constantly on a hrd surface, at best, leaves you strong in one narrow way, but weak in all the others.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

One of the classic injuries of runners is a type of tendonitis called Iliotibial Band Syndrome (IBS). It is caused by a relative imbalance in the strength of the gluteus maximus and gluteus minimus, which are lateral stabilizers that control the side to side movement of the hips.

You don’t need them much on a flat surface, because it’s easy remain upright on a flat sidewalk, but with IBS the lateral stabilizers get relatively weak compared to other leg muscles, and a painful imbalance occurs. Sometimes you see people running sideways in an effort to prevent IBS, but it won’t really help unless they are willing to do at least half the run that way!

The Solution

Get off the Asphalt! Trail running and cross country running are both excellent alternatives to the monotony of road running every day. So lace up your cross country running shoes and head out the door for the nearest park or golf course. You legs will thank you!

Bicycling is a great way to become more fit, lose weight and save money by using your car less frequently. One hour of bicycling burns around 400 to 500 calories, helps build muscle and burns fat. However, to get the most benefit from bicycling, you have to get the right bicycle for the type of riding you intend to do. Here are the different types of bicycles for you to choose from.

If you intend to do most of your riding on city streets, you should consider a road bike. A road bike has a lightweight frame and skinny tires, which makes it ideal for racing since they allow you to go very fast. However, road bikes are not very comfortable to ride since the tires are not shock-absorbent, and the bike’s design provides for a hunched-forward riding position that may result in soreness for riders unused to it.

Those who want to use their bikes in rough, off-road terrain should get a mountain bike. Mountain bikes have sturdier frames and wider tires, and allow riders to ride in a higher position, making for a more comfortable ride and one that is better for people with lower back problems. On the other hand, mountain bikes are not as fast as road bikes, which will probably not be much of a consideration if you don’t intend to use it for racing.
Hybrid bikes combine the best features of both road bikes and mountain bikes. Hybrids have the thicker frames, wider tires and more comfortable riding positions of mountain bikes combined with the lighter rims and components of road bikes. They are the best choice for riders who intend to do most of their bicycling in an urban setting.

Finally, cruiser bikes the best choice for casual riders, since they have wide tires and seats, as well as upright handlebars. While they may not be the fastest ride, cruisers are undoubtedly the most comfortable.

If none of these bikes fits your needs, there are more specialized varieties such as recuments and tricycles which could work better for you if you have balance problems and allow you to make bicycling a regular part of your exercise routine.

One mistake some people make is going gung ho into biking without building up the “biking muscles” gradually. Even if you are gradual about things, tired muscles can be a normal consequence. If you find yourself sore after an excursion, a portable heat pad can be just the right thing. Wearing a knee support, if you find it helpful, is also a tip that may help.

You will discover that the energized feeling you experience will be well-worth the effort of exercise.

It can be a daunting task to weed through all the information on the many different types and brands of elliptical machines. Elliptical cross trainers range in price, quality, features, technology, styles, and warranties. There are elliptical that are made specifically for commercial fitness gyms and some are geared more to the home gym users. Jumping and buying an elliptical machine can be a fool’s errand. It is best to collect information and make an educated decision. This article helps to organize what to look for in an elliptical machine.

1. Go To A Fitness Store and Try Some Elliptical Machine Out.

You may have an idea on what you might want to spend, but find that after testing some elliptical cross trainers out that your expectation will have changed. You might find that less expensive machines may not be of the quality you want, or you can find a machine that has everything you want at a reasonable price. A person’s opinion of a machine can greatly change upon testing its performance.

2. Develop A Rating System.

It is hard to compile all the needed information in a usable manner, so come up with some criteria that is important to you and assign a star or number system to rate each elliptical. Criteria to think about may include price, stride length, warranty, stability, features, design, technology, and whatever criteria you can come up with. It doesn’t have to be specific in nature, like knowing the exact price. Just give a value to each criterion and then see which machines rates the highest. Try to take as much thought out of it at this point. All you are trying to do is to get a short list of machines to choose from.

3. Learn About the Different Ways of Purchasing An Elliptical?

Is there a possible payment plan? Can the item be found in good condition used? Is there a company offering special incentives to purchase? There are literally hundreds of stores and many different avenues an elliptical machine can be purchased. A person can buy in many different ways from buying direct, from a neighbor, EBay/Amazon.com, classifieds, pawn shops, and other businesses not thought of here. There are many ways for a person to land the elliptical they want without paying full price for them.

4. Determine What Purpose The Elliptical Will Mean To You.

If you are only intending to use your elliptical machine sparingly then I’d suggest not investing a ton of money into one because it could great affect the way you feel about your machine. Now if you are going to use your elliptical machine as your prime means to exercise then I suggest being a little less price conscious and get a quality machine to match your activity level. For instance, I did not buy a commercial grade elliptical because I wanted to do more P90X and running at times, but I grabbed a very quality machine because during the winter I use it a lot more due to the weather where I live. Knowing how the machine will be integrated into your life will help determine the type of elliptical you should be entertaining.

Final Thoughts

The criteria above can be a bit vague, but from experience it is exactly what I used when purchasing my elliptical machine. In fact, I compared buying an elliptical cross trainer the same way I would buy a car. Many of the factors I stated above and the process I laid out is exactly how I would go about buying a car. I think if you use these ideas to formulate a plan you will find the elliptical you want at a price you will feel comfortable with.

First of all, the quality build of the Powerblock adjustable dumbbells is unmatched in the industry. While there are some good quality competitors such as Weider, most of the other sets out there are just not very solid in terms of quality. In fact, even some of the most well-respected names in fitness (Bowflex and Gold’s Gym) have similar systems that don’t hold up nearly as well as the Powertech set.

Second, just think about all the free weights that you will be replacing. While this same feature is true of all adjustable dumbbell sets, if you decide to go with the Powertech ones you will have even a great advantage – the amount of weight you can add to the system. Most sets allow you to lift up to 50 lbs, starting at 5-10 lbs and increasing by 5 lb increments. This means that on a 50 lb set you actually get over 500 lbs of weight! So you can really replace quite a bit of hex and traditional dumbbells, and in most cases 50 lb sets are more than enough. However, for power and more intense lifters the Powertech dumbbell set offers even more weight – allowing you add to the 50 pound set later on if you so choose. This feature alone justifies the higher cost of this particular set, especially for people looking for good chest workouts and leg workouts with the dumbbells.

While these are only two advantages of the Powertech system there are many others – but just these two alone give you a glimpse at why the top fitness trainers and professionals recommend this brand for their clients.

The Polar FS2 Heart Monitor sports watch is the perfect training tool for starting your heart rate based training program with. This is an entry-level fitness watch from Polar, a world leader in heart rate monitoring technology and a company that lays claim to being the developer of the first ever heart rate monitor watch back in the 1970’s. The Fs2 Polar makes a great buy if you are starting out, or if you are experienced, and don’t need a lot of features or wish to spend a lot of money. Being a Polar, while simple in terms of features, you can rest assured that your Polar Fs2 watch is of the highest standard in heart rate technology and will not let you down.

The Fs2 watch is a member of Polar’s fitness and cross training line of fitness watches, and can be used for just about any form of training. This heart rate watch features a digitally encoded signal that is resistant to interference from other equipment and power lines. The basic real-time display capabilities of the watch include the ability to display your maximum and average real-time (bpm) – beats per minute. The watch also facilitates heart rate training zones that let you set up upper and lower heart rate limits in your “zone”. The Fs2 watch tracks your continual, real-time heart rate and determines whether or not it is within the training zone. When your heart rate is out of the zone, the watch will sound an alarm (audible or visual). Heart rate zone training is an excellent way of ensuring you are training at the right intensity.

The Fs2 watch features a single training summary file. More prolific Polar fitness watches feature multiple files, and if you need more storage of your fitness progress, it might pay to look into some of the more advanced watches. A training summary file presents a summary of one training session and includes average and maximum heart rate for the session. The Fs2 features a neat feature called Heart-Touch button-free operation. It allows you to change the display of the watch without touching a button – when you bring the position of the watch close to the chest strap, heart rate information is displayed for instance.

The Polar Fs2 watch features a large, front push-button that is easily pressed while on the move. The oversized digital display on the watch makes it easy to view your running time, even when you are engaged in a motion sport like running or cycling. The watch also includes backlight for running at night, 50 meter water resistance, 12 and 24 hour time display and weekday indicator. In terms of quality heart rate training, you would be hard pressed to find a better entry-level watch.

If you’re looking for a proper cardio workout that will make you feel great and help you look your best, there are a number of things you can do to get your heart rate up into the target range. Personal trainers recommend that for best weight loss results, a person perform moderate cardiovascular exercise for at least 45 minutes per day. What exactly does “moderate cardiovascular exercise” mean, exactly? Ideally, you should be able to carry on limited conversation during your workout. You shouldn’t be able to have a full conversation with the person next to you (in that case, you’re probably not working hard enough); simply being able to carry on a conversation with short words and phrases will suffice. For best weight loss results, it’s important not to push past this into the zone where you can’t speak at all; in this anaerobic regime, weight loss takes a back seat to muscle gain.

So, what are some ways to ensure that you get your cardio exercise on a daily basis? Well, the first thing that many people begin with is a jogging routine. Jogging is much like running, except that it’s at a slightly slower pace to ensure that limited conversation can be maintained. Your heart rate will remain in the target zone, and you’ll be able to easily finish the workout feeling somewhat winded. Most people find jogging outdoors to be the most enjoyable way to get a workout done, but that may not be possible for some people due to location. People unable to jog outside may consider purchasing any number of cheap treadmills to get the job done.

If you’re not quite able to begin with a jogging routine, get out and start walking. Wear a pedometer to track your steps, and try to beat your personal bests each day.

What are pull up bars and how can you use them? Pull ups can be a very intense workout for your upper body. This bar is so unique and convenient that you can take your “portable gym” with you! This is great for the employee who travel a lot for work, or the college student who doesn’t always have the time to make it to the gym. There is nothing difficult about it. Secure the bars and you are ready to give yourself an affordable upper body workout! The pull up bars are your answer to working out while you travel!

Pull ups work your whole upper body from your pectorals, biceps, along with the muscles in your shoulders and back. These bars are a great option if you are looking for minimum cost with maximum results! In this economy if you are looking at best price value versus the results obtained, the pull up bars will be the perfect investment.

There are many types of bars to choose from. You need to figure out where to place your bar and the size bar needed. You can even design your own bar to fit your home needs. If you research, you will find easy directions for bars you can make that do not require screws or holes in the door frame. This is perfect for temporary living quarters or college dorms. The estimate weight capacity usually runs to a maximum of 300 pounds.

If you shop around, you can find many exercise bars to fit all the different needs people have! Should you decide to build one, there are also numerous bar types to pick from. Make your own bar and perfect it to your own needs. A fun way to make a little side money would be to share what you have learned with others. If you enjoyed building a bar, then spread the word amongst your friends. If you enjoyed the designing aspect, then get a domain and share the information with others!

Exercising with the pull up bar is as good physically as it is mentally. Share your results and it will be equally rewarding!

If you’re a serious runner (or even a somewhat-serious runner), you have no doubt heard of pulse watches, and maybe even owned one. Likewise, you probably have an interest in GPS running watches as well.

Each of these running watch styles has its own major advantages, and they can be used to even greater advantage when combined into a single, GPS pulse watch. But first, let’s look at each of the two functions to get a sense of their intended purpose, before exploring their combined benefit.

Pulse watches

The purpose of a pulse watch is, of course, to keep track of your pulse while you exercise. A sensor on the back of the watch reads your pulse as the blood pulses through your wrist, and gives a reading on the watch face of how fast that pulse corresponds to a heart rate (measured in beats per minute). It’s a good way to tell how hard you are working at any given point in your workout.

GPS Watches

GPS watches, rather than tracking what’s going on inside your body, track where your body is in relation to the rest of the world. Using satellite signals, a GPS watch can track not only where you are in latitude and longitude, but some also measure height above sea level as well. Traditionally, a GPS running watch is used so that you can chart whatever running course you like (even through trails in a park or forest preserve), and then when you get home, you’ll have a readout of not only where and how far you went, but also how fast you ran, as well.

Combined GPS & Pulse Watches

The advantage, then, of combining the two, is seeing how this data corresponds. GPS running watches with pulse watch technology will chart not only where you went and how fast you went, but how your heart rate changed over the course of your run. Anyone can return from a long run and tell you they are tired. But with the data returned from one of these watches, you can see exactly which parts of the course gave you the most trouble, and you can also track your improvement over time.

Adding GPS technology to a pulse watch is one of the most effective ways to get truly useful feedback on your fitness.

If you are in the market for a great lap swimming pool then you will have several great choices to choose from. These choices include: indoor lap pools, outdoor and inground lap pools, and outdoor but above ground lap pools; and each option has some great benefits that you need to take into consideration before you make up your mind. In this post we will review a few of these basic advantages with each option.

Option 1 – Indoor lap pools

Indoor lap pools are great if you live in cold climates, or climates that have wild swings in temperatures. In addition, it makes it very easy (as in you don’t have any excuses) to swim laps and workout if you have the pool in your house. Furthermore, you can purchase them as ‘Endless’ swimming pools that can even convert to a spa!

Option 2 – Outdoor Lap Pools that are above ground

Above ground lap swimming pools are great if you want to save money or have a quick installation process. In addition, the area required for these types of pools is not that much – in fact some people have simply had them put up on the side strip of their lawn/yard that is almost never used, thus not taking up hardly any of the main-use lawn or garden area. And, there is probably not a cheaper way to get a good lap pool.

Option 3 – Outdoor lap pool that is in the ground

Usually this option is done with someone simply using their traditional swimming pool, but not always. There are some people who will install full length lap pools in the ground. These pools are obviously very long and narrow and therefore also don’t take up as much room as a full pool would. However, they are a little more expensive than the above-ground option would be.
