Exercise Is A Natural Depression Treatment
There are a lot of different reasons why you might exercise regularly: to make your body look good, to be strong and capable, to be attractive. But one thing you may not have thought of is the preventative power of exercise to help you stave off depression. Recent studies have shown that regular exercise not only help ward off mental illness, it is actually one of the best natural treatments for depression.
We all recognize how important health is to our well-being, and to our ability to live a happy and productive life. But most of us often forget about the importance of our mental health until something happens to make us aware of this. In some cases, a family member or loved one will be afflicted by mental illness, and in other cases we find ourselves suffering from us. It’s not something that most of us would expect to experience, because our culture teaches us that we should be able to control our own minds.
Unfortunately, that is frequently not the case. Depression is one of the most common complaints that primary care physicians hear about from their patients. Most people will experience some clinically significant depression symptoms at some time during their life. A lot of what is done to treat depression is to simply hand you a prescription for some medications that recent research has shown to be no more effective than placebo! Exercise is a natural depression treatment.
Isn’t it good to know that something you’re doing anyway is actually helping you to avoid the experience of unhappiness, anhedonia, and listlessness that so many others are experiencing in their lives? This is just another reason, along with weight management, improving your appearance, and improving your energy levels, why regular exercise is a healthy and beneficial activity. It’s always nice to get an extra little push of motivation to do something that you were already planning on doing. And the fact that exercise is a natural depression treatment, is all the more reason to keep right on doing it.
