Leg Press Machine Information

A leg press machine is an excellent multi joint exercise for strengthening and toning your legs as well as building lower body strength.  Leg press machines primarily work the quadriceps and gluteus maximus (butt), but also partially work your hamstrings and calves.

There are two major types of leg press machines: there is the vertical leg press machine and the horizontal leg press machine.  There are is also the angled leg press machine.  Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

With a vertical leg press machine you lay down on your back and push the weight straight up over you.  The advantage to vertical leg press machines is that they tend to take up less space and are less expensive than other forms of leg press machines.  The disadvantages are that they do not usually hold as much weight as angled leg press machines.  Some users have also complained of back or neck pain  using this type of exercise machine.

With a horizontal or seated leg press machine the user sits upright and pushes a metal block or pedals to move the weight away from their body.  A horizontal less press machine may actually be attached to other equipment such as a home gym.  The advantage is they can be inexpensive and take up less space when they are part of a larger home gym equipment set.  A disadvantage is some users complain of pressure being put on their knee joints.

With an angled leg press machine, which is sometimes called a 45 degree leg press machine, the user is seat with his or her body reclined at an angle.  This type of leg press machine is generally the most comfortable of the different types and doesn’t put a lot of strain on one’s back or joints.  Angled leg press machines all tend to hold the most weight.  The drawbacks is this type of leg press machine tends to be the most expensive and take up the most space.

Before you buy a leg press machine you should definitely try the different types out to figure out which will suit your needs and fitness goals the best.  You can also compare different types and models online to get pricing, features and specifications.  You can buy a leg press machine at a fitness or department store in your local area, purchase one online, or even buy a used leg press machine from someone you know or find one in an ad or on Ebay.
