Side effects of Bariatric Surgery
There are many ways how you can lose weight but if they don’t work and you don’t see any other option left than Bariatric surgery might be your last resort. Surgery of the stomach has become quite popular because the results are almost instantly, therefore many people rather have surgery than a long lasting not working diet. However, a surgery is not without risks and in a worst case scenario surgery on the stomach might result in death.
Off course I don’t want to scare anyone with this serious side effect. Skilled surgeons will minimize the risk on any complication but the truth is that there are indeed some serious side effects with bariatric surgery. This type of surgery is intended for people with severe obesity who need to loose weight drastically. This type of surgery should only take place when there are no other options left and the obesity is causing life threatening complications.
You can place bariatric surgery complications in 2 groups. The general complications are associated with all serious surgeries and are bleedings, leakage of the wound, infections on the wound, pneumonia and side effects of the anesthesia. The most important specific complication is gastric dumping.
In patients with Gastric dumping syndrome the food will slide to the stomach too fast. The result of this is that the stomach can not properly digest the food and passes it on to the large intestines. But the large intestines are not able to digest the food that passes the stomach to rapidly and this will cause vomiting, nausea, lightheadedness, bloating and diarrhea.
Almost 20% of all patients after bariatric surgery will suffer from gastric dumping syndrome. There is a differentiation between late dumping and early dumping. In early gastric dumping syndrome patients will acquire the symptoms within 1 hour after food intake. In late gastric dumping the symptoms will occur after 3 to 4 hours.
There is not really a cure for this side effect, the only way to cure it is by giving the stomach time to adapt to its new size. The only way to lesson the side effects is by eating small meals at a time. In this way the stomach has more time to digest the food.
